Why do the bands that sell the most tickets play in the better time slots and the bands that sell the least play earlier or first?
Gorilla Productions believes the bands that work hardest should get to play in front of the most people. It would not be fair for a band that worked hard selling tickets and promoting the event to play early or first, while a band that didn’t promote or sell many tickets gets to play a prime time slot in front of 350 people.

What happens after we book a show with Gorilla Productions?
One of our agents will call you about a week after we booked your band to see if you received the information package. The info packet includes all the show details, promotional tips, studio swag, and presale tickets for your event. We will contact your band weekly up until your show, making sure your band is well informed. We will also check to see how your band is doing on ticket sales and to help you promote the event.

Ticket sales and participation in promoting the event are completely voluntary. There is no penalty for not actively promoting your bands performance, but the bands that work hard promoting and selling tickets are rewarded by playing in front of the biggest crowds. Keep in mind, if your band works hard to bring out fans, you will get a time slot next to other bands that have also worked hard promoting, increasing the size of our audience.

Why does Gorilla Productions use the crowd response instead of hiring professional judges?
Gorilla Productions believes the fairest and best system for judging the battles is by crowd response. The door is opened to a number of problems if a panel of judges is hired.

A judge is a person with opinions and bias much like anyone else. If we hired all judges that only liked metal, it wouldn’t be fair to emo or alternative rock bands. There is also the possibility that a judge might have a personal relationship with one of bands being judged. This could result in them voting unethically. Although we’d like to think that everyone is honest, as the promoter, we would have to watch for bribes and unethical behavior by all judges. Even using our best efforts to prevent such occurrences, it would be difficult to disprove some accusations.

More importantly, music is subjective. What one person loves, another person dislikes or even hates. A panel of three to five people shouldn’t decide for 350 to 800 people what is good and what is not.

Are we allowed to play cover songs?
Yes. Your band may play cover songs. Every artist or band should be allowed to express themselves in a manner in which they feel comfortable. Please keep in mind that many famous bands over the years became famous after covering another artist’s song. Furthermore, to disallow covers becomes a logistical nightmare. What if a band covers a song that’s so old no one has ever heard of it or one band claims another bands covered a song but our event coordinator has never heard the cover. The Battle of the Bands is not a contest for cover bands, but bands are permitted to have covers in their set.

Will you book my bands tour?
Maybe. Just like major talent agencies that represent national artists, Gorilla booking agents develop good working relationships with local artists to help take their band to the next level. However, we do not exclusively book tours. Your band would have to have a contract with Gorilla Management to be eligible. Out of town shows are offered to artist development bands. Talk to your booking agent on how to get into the Artist Development Program.

What is pay to play, and does Gorilla Productions promote pay to play events?
Pay to play is an event where a promoter or club requires a band to sell a minimum number of tickets in order to participate. Gorilla Productions never requires bands to sell a minimum number of tickets, and therefore is not pay to play. However, we do encourage bands to sell presale tickets. It is one of the best ways to insure a great turn out for a local band concert. Occasionally, we have a band or two on a show that didn’t sell any tickets at all. Ironically, the bands that take no effort to sell tickets or promote, are the people that tend to complain about presale tickets.
